Transport Minister Rosie Winterton has announced that Southend Borough Council is to receive £1m of funding for repairs to be carried out at two coastal highway sites.
The money will allow Southend to begin repair work at Cliff Parade and Belton Way in Leigh on Sea where water absorption combined with nearby cliff falls have created a risk of land slippage.
Cliff Parade is an important route for local bus services and forms a main link to both Leigh and Chalkwell railway stations. Belton Way is also an important route for local bus services which serve Leigh railway station. It is the main access route to the Old Leigh Town, which is an important tourist area providing employment. Both roads provide an alternative for local traffic to the A13.
