Seven buses in Jersey to get Wi-Fi access

New service offers 30 minutes access to the internet for free, each day

Seven Connex buses in Jersey have been fitted with Wi-Fi.

Depending on their device, they will be able to access broadband speeds of up to 14.4Mb, via the Jersey Telecom mobile network.

The first two ‘Wi-Fi buses’ are new double-deckers which have gone onto the road, with a further five single-decker buses being equipped with the Wi-Fi equipment in the next couple of weeks.

The Wi-Fi service itself is provided through an exclusive partnership between Jersey Telecom and The Cloud, and offers 30 minutes access to the Internet for free, each day.

Users need to register with The Cloud in order to use the service, and once the free thirty minutes have expired they can purchase unlimited access for just £5 per month. That price also covers the 22,000 Cloud hotspots in the UK and Europe, as well as the others in Jersey and Guernsey.

Tim Ringsdore, Managing Director at Jersey Telecom said: "We have worked hard with the Transport and Technical Services Department and Connex to provide this service, and think it will be really useful for bus passengers."

"Many customers want to stay connected wherever they are, and that includes on the bus during their daily commute – this new service enables them to check e-mails, surf the Internet or access social media sites, using a high speed mobile broadband connection."
