Motorists urged to abandon bad driving habits

Surrey County Council found reckless behaviour including applying make up behind the wheel

Motorists have been urged to abandon bad driving habits for their new year resolution.

Examples of reckless driving behaviour including shaving, applying make-up and changing clothes behind the wheel were uncovered by Surrey County Council and Surrey Police when they launched the Drive SMART campaign, which aims to reduce anti-social driving and increase safety on the county's roads.

Now motorists are being urged to turn over a new leaf by resolving to abandon antics such as these together with more common bad driving habits such as texting, drink-driving and tailgating.

From September 2008 to August 2009 there were 594 people killed or seriously injured on Surrey roads.

From September 2009, when Drive SMART was launched, to August 2010 there were 514 people killed or seriously injured on Surrey roads, representing a year on year reduction of 80.

Dr Andrew Povey, Leader of Surrey County Council, said: "Not only does anti-social driving blight communities and affect people's quality of life, it is also dangerous and can lead to injury or death."
