£100m for pothole repairs also announced
The Coalition Government have announced £200m of additional investment in regional railways in their 2011 Budget speech.
The £85m Ordsall Chord scheme will go ahead, linking Manchester's Victoria and Piccadilly stations and will reduce journey times between Liverpool and Leeds.
The Government is also committing to the Swindon to Kemble redoubling scheme, which will complement the electrification of the Great Western Main Line to Wales.
Also announced was £100m to help councils repair winter potholes on roads.
