2010 Budget outlines £285 million for motorway improvements

Funding also for road repairs throughout the country.

The Government have announced in their Budget 2010 speech that they will be providing £285 million for improvements in the motorway network.

These improvements will include allowing hard shoulder running to expand capacity.

Also announced was £100 million provided to pay for vital repairs to local roads throughout the country.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling said: "Roads are, of course, an essential part of our transport network. The bad weather of the last few months has taken a damaging toll on their condition."

"For this and other such measures, there will be consequential provisions, where appropriate, for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland."

Plans have also been announced for Crossrail, Heathrow along with high speed trains to improve transport and support approximately 100,000 jobs over the coming years, and the Government is also taking forward plans for a high-speed rail link from London to the Midlands, and then to the North and Scotland.

Fuel prices are set to rise by one penny in April, a further one penny in October and the remainder in January.

It was also announced that while the Government cannot develop and manufacture electric cars, they can provide the support to help projects take place in Britain, such as the recent announcement by Nissan to produce its first mass-produced electric car in Sunderland.
