The new Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced new plans to dramatically increase the size of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in a bid to improve the capital’s air quality.
Under the proposals, the ULEZ would be extended from the south to the north circular roads, rather than the much smaller congestion charge zone.
Khan also suggested that the introduction of the ULEZ could be brought forward and come into force by 2019, as opposed to 2020 as originally planned.
The move comes as part of plans to clean up London’s air quality by offering drivers an incentive to use cleaner vehicles and alternative transport instead of older, more polluting vehicles.
Khan said that former Mayor Boris Johnson was too slow to act on cleaning up London’s air, which he describes as London’s ‘biggest environmental challenge’.
The new Mayor said that the capital needs to ‘act before an emergency’ and that ’big, bold and sometimes difficult policies’ are essential to meet the scale of the challenge.
