Chancellor George Osborne has confirmed in the 2016 Budget that the High Speed 3 (HS3) railway has been given the green light.
Alongside a commitment to further devolve powers to the north, the Chancellor confirmed that £300 million extra investment in infrastructure would be made available to further support growth and help to build the Northern Powerhouse.
£60 million of that will be provided to develop plans for HS3 to better connect Leeds and Manchester, as well as improve other transport connections between northern cities.
An extra £161 million has been pledged to accelerate the upgrades to the M62 motorways into a four-lane ‘smart motorway’, which is seen a crucial link between the east and west.
To go alongside this, £75 million will be allocated to develop a business case for future transformation of east-west road connections, including a new Trans-Pennine tunnel under the Peak District between Sheffield and Manchester, as well as options to enhance the A66, A69 and the north-west quadrant of the M60.
£15 million will be also allocated from the Pothole Action Fund to repair around 277,000 potholes on northern roads during 2016-17.
