93.5 per cent of trains on Britain's railways on time during September

Network Rail figures also show 13 of 19 operators see their performance improve compared to the previous year.

93.5 per cent of service on Britain's railway ran on time from 22 August to 18 September, Network Rail figures have shown.

The figures show an improvement on the 93.6 per cent shown in same period last year.

In all, 13 of the 19 operators saw their performance improve compared to the same period last year, with Virgin Trains seeing the biggest improvement up to 91.3 per cent from 89.0 per cent last year.

The rest saw marginal movements in performance, and Chiltern Railways was also found to be the most punctual.

Robin Gisby, director of operations and customer services, said: "Performance for services using the East Coast main line is presently running below the very high standards we set ourselves."

"Working closely with the train operator, joint action plans are in place, and we expect performance to improve over the coming months."
