Balfour Beatty awarded £50 million contract for station improvements

Edinburgh Waverley train station improvements include new glass panels and new roof drainage systems.

Balfour Beatty has won a £50 million contract from Network Rail to undertake major improvement work at Edinburgh Waverley train station.

It will deliver key elements of the wider station renewal plan including renovation of the 34,000m2 roof, including 28,000 new glass panels, repairs to steelwork and columns and repainting steelwork and columns and installation of new roof drainage system.

Also, new lighting within the main station roof area, renovation to the Calton and Market Street footbridges, removal of the redundant bridge link between the north side of the main building and the building at the northern perimeter, renovations to external walls and new concourse and platform surfacing.

The new clear, strengthened glass replacing the cloudy wired glass in the existing roof will allow more natural light to flood the station concourse and platforms as well as being easier to clean and maintain.

The station’s original Victorian ironwork features will be repaired and repainted while non-essential station furniture, buildings and redundant high level walkways will be removed permanently.

Work begins on site in spring this year, and will be carried out until 2013.
