£38.4 million to tackle congestion in North Yorkshire
New road to bypass communities and remove 60 per cent of traffic from existing road.
A new £38 million bypass will benefit three North Yorkshire communities by tackling congestion, cutting pollution and improving road safety.
The scheme consists of a 4.8 mile new road bypassing Bedale, Aiskew and Leeming Bar and linking the A684 trunk road with the A1 (M).
60 per cent of traffic will therefore be removed from the existing road, which carries 14,000 vehicles a day at its busiest point.
A £33.4 million contribution has been provisionally agreed by the Department for Transport, with £5 million provided for by North Yorkshire County Council.
The bypass will improve access to the A1 (M), the North York Moors, the Leeming Bar industrial estate, Northallerton and other locations.
Transport Minister Sadiq Khan said: "An efficient and reliable transport system is the lifeblood of every local community."
"The scheme will also improve safety for residents in Bedale, Aiskew and Leeming Bar – particularly pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders –and increase the reliability of public transport in the area."
