New Transport Secretary also named.
The Conservatives have outlined their stance on transport on their government website.

In their new coalition agreement, they state that there will be an establishment of a high speed rail network.

Further information on their stance on transport outlines that this will connect London and Heathrow with Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

Construction will begin in 2015.

Stage two will bring the North East, Scotland and Wales into the network.

They have also outlined their aim to improve life for commuters, including reforming the railways to provide better focus on problems that matter most to passengers, support Crossrail and introduce a moratorium on building on disused rail lines.

The announcements come as the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government have named Philip Hammond as their new Secretary of State for Transport.

His responsibilities will include the spending review, transport security, high speed rail and overall responsibility for Transport Strategy.
