Chinese firm offers to install mobile phone network on London Underground

£50m installation could be a gift from China in time for the 2012 Olympics

Chinese telecoms firm, Huawei, has offered to install mobile phone transmitters in the London Underground, The Sunday Times has reported.

The phone network will be installed in time for the 2012 Olympics, and Huawei is offering to put in the £50m phone network free of charge as a gift from one Olympic nation to another.

The Sunday Times said mobile network operators Vodafone and O2 had agreed to pick up the tab for installation work, while Huawei would hope to make an income from maintenance fees.

Mobile transmitters would be installed along the ceilings of tunnels so calls could be made and received on the underground for the first time.

A Transport for London spokesman said: "Transport for London and the Mayor of London are currently in discussion with mobile phone operators and other suppliers about the potential provision of mobile phone services on the deep Tube network."
