£89 million funding for ‘Guided Busway’

Houghton Regis to Luton Airport service will deliver speedy and reliable connections.

An £89 million investment will create a ‘Guided Busway’ for bus travellers between Luton, Dunstable and Houghton Regis.

The service will cover just over seven miles and stretch from Houghton Regis to Luton Airport.

It will be provided by specially adapted buses capable of running on their own track and on the public roads and will deliver speedy and reliable connections to the town centres of Luton, Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Luton Airport Parkway station and Luton Airport.

The Department for Transport will provide £80.28 million, with the remaining funding being provided by local authorities and private investors.

The main construction of the busway is due to start in December 2010 with completion scheduled for April 2012.

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan said: "When completed, this scheme will benefit the entire community by easing congestion and encouraging greater integration between services."
